Background Research

Video production

Of course to make a music video you need the equipment, song, director and some initial ideas.
Looking at a video from 2006 a fairly recent video Panic! At The Disco: I write sins not tragedies
During the first few cut scenes of the camera going back and forth from the singer and the actor the music for the singer is diegetic but for the actors it's non- diegetic, for the singer the camera is extremly close up to his face, where as the actors is mid shot and long shot and at one point it's extremely close up when he sings. During the rest of the video it is all very out of control and alot of cut scenes and a few bits of panning but the transitions work well.

I then looked at motley crue- girls, girls, girls from 1987.
During the video it seems to focus alot on only a few people and the layout seems very simple there is alot of still camera work I only saw some panning while the band is on their bikes and the editing was alot of cutting same as the recent video just seemed more controlled.

Looking at both videos i feel the sound is better on the recent video and same as the video footage itself, where the 2006 had a lot going on in the back ground the 1987 had either non or very little and again was very controlled. In 2006 the camera was basically everywhere and the editing was mad but once again the 1987 it looked as if they had planned it. I feel the camera quality, editing systems and sound technology has improved quite a lot in the last 19 years.

Production diary

Friday 7th January 2011:

Last week we had to choose two out of three options, either Video, Music or print production.
Once we had picked then we had to make a new blog and and write the skills we already knew for the part of production we wanted to do and the skills we needed to develop.

Then we went to the music department and had a look around, the people who hadn't chose music they had the choose to change to doing music from something else if they liked the look of doing it and only one or two people did. For the people who picked music production began setting up the the recording area after having a talk about what we were going to be doing we had the different type of microphones explained to up and why they are used and where they go for the guitar and for the bass and guitar amps
We then began a little recording session with the guitar, bass and drums trying to get the levels right, once we had done that we listened to what we had recorded and then had to go and tidy up the recording area.

January 21st 2011

We began but changing the song from Paramore the only exception, Paramore to looking up, to knocking on heavens door.

The drums were already set up so we didn't have to set them up, all we had to do was set up the amps for the guitar and bass.
We were looking at how you can change the volume of each mic on the drums and why some are louder and some are quiet we also learnt how to balance out everything.
Other than that we just recorded the drums, bass and guitar and discussed what we were doing next friday.

Skills Development

My skills i already know in music production are:

Working in a recording studio
Preforming in front of a audience

this is because i have been involved in Hijack that is something out of school but it is also to do with school, you had to create a song, record it then preform it.
I also had to perform in front of a few other bands when i had to take music in school during year 9.
Also there is an upcoming event with hijack.

The skills i know in video production are:

Using the Sony A1 camera
Compression
Drama

I take drama at school and i could think of some things to do in the video
I used the Sony A1 camera during college where we looked at white balance
I also used Final cut a bit during college as well.

The skills i need to develop to complete this assignment are:

Confidence so i can actually preform in the studio and record to my highest standard

My camera skills, i have already worked with cameras a bit but not much so that could be developed

I could use more confidence so i can preform to my highest standard no matter what i'm doing for the music production side.

The new technology i might be using would be:

cameras
professional recording studio.

I have used cameras before, like the Sony A1, nikon D3000, and really basic cameras.
Also the professional recording studio will be different to the higher than standard studio i have been to twice with hijack.

Choice Of Medium

The two mediums i want to specialize in are:

1.Music production
2.Video production
